The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 2.0
Weeny Free Video Converter enables you to convert between a large variety of video file formats. All popular file formats are supported, including 3GP, ASF, AVI, FLV, MKV, MP4, MPEG, VOB, WMV and many others. It lets you convert to file formats supported by all kinds of portable devices, such as iPhone, Zune, PSP, etc. Furthermore, it can also extract the audio track from video files and save it to common audio files such as MP3 or WAV.
Even though it looked very promising due to the fact that it is free and yet it offers quite a lot of features, Weeny Free Video Converter was a big disappointment to me. Its interface is quite simple and easy-to-use, but squeezing all the output file settings in the lower right corner of the main window was an unfortunate decision in my opinion. A lot of unused, empty space is left under the list of loaded files, and changing the output parameters is a more difficult job than it should be. Anyway, the design of the interface wasn't the main cause of disappointment for me. It was the fact that successfully converting the video files looked like a lottery to me. Some files were converted; others simply weren’t, regardless of their format or of the selected output type. The fact that the application only displayed “error” next to the file status instead of providing a clear and detailed conversion report that would explain the cause of the failure was not exactly helping either. Furthermore, the speed of the conversion, when the conversion actually worked, was horribly low. Converting a 4-minutes AVI video to a MP4 file took about 10 minutes, which is quite a lot by my standards.
Briefly, if you want a free video converter that may, or may not, convert your video files, and you don’t mind taking chances, you could give Weeny Free Video Converter a try, as there’s nothing else to lose, except some time.
